Guide to Using the
Library
Under the authority of God and His Word, the library is committed to educating and equipping students with theological, spiritual, and practical knowledge for ministry and to increase their knowledge base and life-long learning practices by utilizing a variety of information sources to fulfill a student’s theological education.
Our Values
· The authority of Word of God
· The centrality of the church
· The worth and dignity of the individual
· The priority of servanthood
· The practice of integrity
· The responsibility of stewardship
As a community, SLBC is committed to maintaining an atmosphere which reflects our life in Christ and ultimately gives Him praise and glory. This is accomplished in at least three ways:
SLBC Library
Access Policy
June, 2010
Library Information Resources
The library is a collection of shared resources for
ALL the SLBC community. Overdue
materials or hogging materials impedes the research and education of fellow
community members. SLBC members are
expected to be considerate of others in their use of materials, return items in
a timely manner so others can use them and in general use library resources and
facilities according to policies determined to permit access to materials for
as many students as possible. Questions
or suggestions about policies are welcomed and will be considered as much as
possible within the financial and personnel limits of the library. Either chat
with library staff or use the suggestion box on top of the book return.
Atmosphere – Many patrons use the library for different purposes, but most people
who visit the library would like to find an atmosphere that is conducive to
study. Since the library is a small
space, talking should be kept to a minimum.
Headsets are available for use with the computer and/or television.
Food and Beverage – Food is not allowed. Beverages
in containers with lids are allowed.
Circulating Books – Books are arranged for easy access by the Dewey Decimal Classification System. All shelving is appropriately labeled to reflect the area of classification that it holds. Circulating books may be checked out for 3 weeks and renewed three times. Faculty may request check out for an entire quarter when necessary. Library users are to return materials to the bookdrop which is emptied daily Monday through Friday 1 hour before the library closes. If a library user uses materials in the library without checking them out, they are to place them on the return cart next to the front counter or leave them on a table instead of re-shelving them so library staff can record their in-library use.
Faculty and students are permitted to have up to 5 items checked out at one time. The individual who checks out any library material is responsible for that material. Library users are not permitted to check out materials for someone who has been suspended from using the library. Library users on suspension are permitted to use library materials in the library, but not to check out any library materials from the library without permission from the Head Librarian.
Renewal - Renewal will not be granted if another patron has placed a hold on the item. Call 763-560-7221 or stop by the library circulation desk to renew your materials. You do not need to bring your items in with you to renew.
Overdue Materials - Fines start accruing when an item becomes overdue. There is a late fine of $.25 per day on these materials. A library user’s privileges may be suspended for library materials that are overdue for an extended period of time or when fines are more than $5.00. It is the responsibility of the borrower to return library materials when they are due. Persons who check out materials for another person run the risk of having to pay fines for someone else. Library fines are to be paid at the Library Desk when returning the late materials. Faculty, administration, and staff are normally not charged fines for overdue library resources. Final grades may not be given to students until all library obligations are fulfilled.
Lost or Damaged Books – Lost or damaged books will cost the library patron $30.00 per book. Lost or damaged media material, i.e. audiocassettes, CDs, VHS, and DVDs which were mass produced are $10.00 each to replace. For original videos and DVDs, the patron will be billed replacement and shipping cost of the item.
Holds – If the item you need is checked out and you wish to be notified of its return, a hold can be placed at the Library Desk. You will be notified when the book is returned and the item will be held for seven days at the circulation desk.
Limited Circulation Materials – These items are kept on the course reserve shelves and have specific circulation limits. Two of these may be checked out at one time and renewed once. Check out of limited circulation items is limited to SLBC students and personnel. There is a $1.00 per day late fee for these materials. If a library user uses these books in the library without checking them out, they are to return them at the Library Desk instead of re-shelving them so library staff can record their in-library use.
Reference Books – These items are non-circulating. Reference books are located at the beginning of the collection and are normally to be used only in the library. Reference books are identified by an (R) above the call number in the library catalog and on the books. After using reference books in the library, library users are to place them on the red book truck at the Library Desk or leave them on the tables instead of re-shelving them so library staff can record their in-library use.
Periodicals – Most of the journals, magazines, and newsletters are located in the same room as the Reference materials and are arranged alphabetically by title. Most titles are kept permanently, but some are kept for one to three years. The library also keeps back issues of non-current periodicals. All periodicals are for library use only for students but faculty may check them out.
Videos and DVDs – All videotapes and DVDs and their catalog records should be marked (V) or (DVD). Most may be checked out for two weeks. One week videos have a late fee of $.25 per day.
Audio Tapes, CDs, and CD-ROMs – Audio tapes and Audio Cassettes are marked with an (A)., and music CD’s with a “C”. These all have a late fee of $.25 per day. If library users use audio tapes, etc , in the library without checking them out, they are to place them on the red book cart next to the circulation desk instead of returning them to the audio tape cabinets so library staff can record their in-library use.
Computers – There are four computers are reserved for faculty and students. Visitors may use the computers, but students and faculty will receive priority. The machines have Microsoft Office, internet, and research capabilities. Please do not save your files on the computers. Please bring a flash drive or a CDR with you and please review the computer use policy. (see separate section on use of the computers below)
Audio/Visual Materials and Equipment – Audio tape players are available at the circulation desk and may be checked out for seven days with a .25 per day late fee. Audio tape players are signed out on a roster sheet with the librarian. When returning audio/visual materials or equipment, library users are to return them to circulation desk instead of putting them in one of the returns. One television with a combo VCR/DVD play is located in the main circulation area.
Electronic

Community Users
– Priority is given to students and personnel of
Confidentiality – The Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974 requires that educational records be kept confidential. Since this includes library records, library users may only see their own records. Others may be given this information only if the person whose records they seek gives permission. Any questions about this should be referred to the Head Librarian or the Registrar. Library records include the number of items a library user has checked out, the names of such items, fines, overdue items, and other personal information. When such information is given out, it should be done so discretely.
Shelving – Library staff re-shelve library materials at least once each day to insure that they are available for library users. Remember to check the shelving truck for missing items and to check in both the Reference and Main Library areas. Ask library staff for assistance if there is difficulty in locating materials.
Library Services
Library Catalog – The Concourse Online Public Access Catalog can be accessed from all library computers. Catalog searching can be done from either the Easy Word Search or Expert Search button. Search results can be sorted in various ways resulting in a list of easily located materials. (For catalog access to work, the computer on the Library Desk must be turned on.)
Course Syllabi – The library provides access to all class syllabi that are furnished by the faculty. These syllabi are located at the end of the Periodical shelving, one notebook for the current quarter and one for past quarters.
